Up a brick walkway and deep driveway, through a beautiful wood front door awaits the surprisingly bright and spacious delight of this wonderful Laurel/Dimond District home. Soaring open beam ceilings in the living room rise above the hardwood floors and a fireplace that echoes the brickwork on the front of the house. Charming 1930s details have been maintained, while the house overall has undergone an upgrade just perfect for today’s lifestyles. Archways and niches lead you through the dining room with floor to ceiling windows and on to the fully upgraded kitchen. The foodie in your family will adore the high-end appliances, acres of counter space, and extra storage. Have a seat in the built-in corner banquette, and gaze upon the greenery outside the many windows while you sip your morning coffee. Wind up the split-level staircase to the three bedrooms - all with plentiful windows and views of treetops. The primary bedroom has the same stunning ceiling as the living room and a spa-like remodeled bathroom. The hall bathroom has all the charm and yet the most gloriously huge shower – big enough to reinstall the square bathtub of the past if needed. Split-level down from the main floor you will find huge laundry space, basement, interior access to the garage and a bonus family/reading/TV room with a half bath that opens level onto the amazing almost quarter-acre property. Urban Farm? Yes! Peaceful level courtyard surrounded by trees, greenery and your own babbling brook! The soothing sounds of the creek make this property very unique for an urban home. Surrounded by trees, the garden, bisected by a gentle creek, invites you to cultivate your own slice of nature. There's enough planting space (five large planting beds) to supply vegetables for everyone on the cul-de-sac! To top it all off, there is a studio ADU (built with permits) attached to the house with a separate entrance to either rent out for extra income or use as a guest suite. Your own slice of Heaven in between the convenient and hip Laurel & Dimond Districts with easy access to transportation, popular restaurants and coffee shops, Farmer Joe’s, parks and all that The Great City of Oakland has to offer!
Laurel District
The Laurel District is a charming neighborhood encompassed by the blocks northeast of Highway 580 between High Street and 35th Avenue. It is bordered by the Allendale neighborhood to the west, the Redwood Heights neighborhood to the east, the Dimond District to the north, and the Maxwell Park neighborhood to the south. At the heart of the neighborhood lies MacArthur Blvd., a bustling shopping area with annual festivals. The Laurel is full of culture and diversity with an array of popular restaurants, coffee shops, bars/brewery, the best pizza, Farmer Joe’s grocery (big and small), a great hardware store, gyms, yoga, and the fantastic annual Laurel District Fair.
The Laurel district traces its name to the Laurel Grove Park residential tract, which was laid out in 1900 at the north end of the district's contemporary boundaries. The prominent Laurel Gateway Arches over MacArthur Blvd at either end of the district were designed and installed in 2006. MacArthur Blvd., which runs through the Laurel district, was once U.S. Highway 50, before Interstate 580 was built to replace it in the early 1960s. Two movie houses in Laurel were in operation from the 1920s until the 1960s. The Laurel Theater is now a church. The Hopkins Cinema at 3525 MacArthur now houses a Goodwill thrift store and an AutoZone auto parts store. Earlier (around the 1950s) it was a Hagstroms supermarket.
One can stroll through the streets and see the many different styles of California Bungalows and Cottages from the early 1900s all the way through the occasional mid-century modern. Strolling is what Laurel residents do (many with their dogs!) along the newly formed pedestrian/biking corridor from The Laurel to Mills College, nature next door with its exquisite grounds that are wonderful to stroll through. There is also an abundance of hiking just up the hill in Leona Canyon and even farther up to Redwood Regional Park Lands.
The Laurel District conveniently located between Hwy 580 & Hwy 13. There are numerous AC Transit buses to take you to BART, SF, downtown Oakland and there is a Casual Carpool stop into the city at High and MacArthur.
